AKCAF Sports Meet 2007


Rules & Regulations

  • Participating College Teams should report at 8.15am for registration
  • Function will start at 8.45am with a silent prayer followed by March Past by all participating colleges
  • Competitions will start at 9.15am with available competitors
  • There should be minimum 5 participants for each event
  • For each event, only two participants are allowed from a member College except for Relay Race and Tug Of War
  • Maximum number of participants for Tug Of War event will be 7
  • The age limit for the children to be followed strictly and if found guilty, the team will be debarred
  • The Organizing committee has the right to amend or cancel any scheduled items under any circumstances
  • The Judges decision will be final
  • Teams should follow the disciple and should keep the ground Clean.

Background

Onam, the most popular festival of Kerala, is well celebrated within the state and outside with high enthusiasm and gaiety. This harvest festival crossed   borders and entered into the social life of the non-resident Indian community in the Gulf, especially the UAE. With several cultural events, traditional food extravaganzas, design of decorated flower patterns and wearing of traditional attire make the season very special.

Organizers

AKCAF, established in 1998, is an apex integrated body of about 50 active independent alumni associations of Kerala colleges, possibly the largest socio-professional organization functioning in the UAE. AKCAF is registered with ICWC which is running under the patronage of Indian Consulate, Dubai. Members of AKCAF include, service personnel, professionals,   prominent businessmen, people from industry and trade, banks and financial institutions, IT, etc., dignitaries of Indian missions, and other social veterans. This gives a strong profile for the AKCAF organization, as it relates to a significant portion of the UAE population, and hence, the AKCAF events are very popular among the Indian community.

Obviously, the large membership of about 20,000 people, spread over business, service and other sectors, is the vital strength of AKCAF, which makes it a distinct arm of the Indian community residing in the UAE.

The fabulous and wide range of AKCAF events include:

  • traditional festivals like Onam;
  • sports meets;
  • widely participated games, such as cricket tourney, etc.
  • educational events;
  • christmas and Iftar meet;
  • other social and literary events.

In the current year 2007, AKCAF is organizing additional innovative events like:

  1. Carnival
    A social get-together giving an opportunity for the whole expatriate community, with family and children, to gather at a common place to participate in fun-filled events and cultural programs.

  2. Business Meet
    Which serves as a platform for establishing interaction between AKCAF and the business celebrities.
Programs:

Onam celebration 2007 will include:

  1. 30 August 2007 – Venue, a prominent school in Dubai.

    Athapookkalam Matsaram, a competition for design of different floral patterns and decorations by the member colleges. The participants in groups use a variety of live flowers and make attractive floral decorations in the presence of an audience at the venue. Continuous cultural events will be held in the background.

    This draws a large crowd to watch the pattern creations.

  2. On 7th September 2007, at Al Nasr Leisureland, Dubai

    Sumptuous lunch with varieties of dishes served on a plantain leaf in an absolute traditional style.

    Traditional Onam procession, displaying vivid umbrellas, folk songs and Pullikkali, etc.

    Inauguration by a well known celebrity.

    Mixed cultural extravaganza with the performance by reputed professional artists and other leading amateur artists.

    Publication of a colourful and pictorial 120-page magazine containing articles and advertisements in commemoration of Onam.

The Legend of Onam

Onam is the festival to welcome the legendary king, Mahabali, in whose prosperous regime people enjoyed equality, freedom and justice.

 When approached by Vamana for three steps of land, the king agreed. Vamana, who was Vishnu in disguise, measured land and sea with one step and heaven with the second step.  When he asked for the third step, to keep  the promise, the king offered his head, and Vamana pushed him down to deep earth.

Onam is a celebration of the symbolic welcome for the king who is believed to return every year to see the well being of his people.
